beetle looking bugs that run into my windows at night

I am in an apartment complex and of course have a window pretty much right next to the parking lot light. There are these little, and some are gigantic, beetle looking bugs that are running into my window and screen that are somehow making their way into my room. They do not die with just a good whack...instead i have to mush them. I live in North Carolina. They are not Junebugs but have that shield shaped back. Somebody either help me figure out what they are or tell me how to get rid of them!!!!!
